Why Choose Fire Retardant Coatings?
1. Bring Existing Timber Up to Standard:
A timber ceiling, panelled wall or boarded corridor that doesn’t meet the required surface spread of flame classification doesn’t have to be stripped out. A fire retardant coating can upgrade it in place, keeping the material and the look while helping it meet the classification required.
2. Protecting Escape Routes:
Corridors, stairwells and lobbies are where flame spread matters most. We coat timber and boarded surfaces on escape routes so they meet the classification set for the building, and we plan the work so routes stay usable while we are on site.
3. Fast, Even Spray Application:
Spraying gives an even film at the specified coverage rate across large ceilings and walls, with surrounding fixtures and finishes masked off first. On our Harlow project the client told us the coating went on much faster than on earlier jobs where it had been hand painted.
4. A Finish That Suits the Building:
Fire retardant coatings can be used on visible and decorative surfaces, not only back-of-house areas. Where appearance matters, a compatible top coat can be applied over the fire retardant coating.
5. Certified and Documented:
The coating system is chosen for the classification required, applied at the specified rate and recorded as we go. On completion we supply fire rating documentation and product data sheets for building control and your fire risk assessment.

Fire Retardant or Intumescent Coatings?
Fire retardant coatings slow the spread of flame across the surface of combustible materials such as timber and boards. They help walls, ceilings and escape routes meet the surface spread of flame classification set for the building.
Intumescent coatings protect structural steel. In a fire they swell into an insulating char that keeps the steel cooler for a set time, typically 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.
Many buildings need both, and we apply both. See our intumescent coatings page for steelwork, or our Harlow case study for fire retardant coatings on a timber ceiling.

Our Process
Site Survey and Specification:
We begin with a site survey to check the surfaces, any existing finishes and the fire classification required, then confirm the coating system and coverage rate.
Preparation and Protection:
Surfaces are cleaned and prepared, and everything that isn’t being coated is masked to protect fixtures, glazing and finishes.
Spray Application:
The fire retardant coating is applied with airless spray equipment at the specified coverage rate, with a compatible top coat where appearance matters.
Quality Control and Documentation:
Once the work is complete, masking is removed and the area is left clean. We hand over fire rating documentation and product data sheets for building control.
